HIKING ALONG THE SOUTH CHINA SEA
By Ashley Sutherland-Winch
When you move to a new place, the first thing that you must do is get to know your surroundings. Of course, this is after you sleep off the jet lag and stress of making an international across-the-globe-move like I did from Las Vegas to Macau. Once the fuzziness wears off and you have had your strong cup of french press coffee, get moving!
I live in an area called Hac Sa Beach at the Southern tip of Macau in Coloane. This entire area used to be a fishing village but now Macau, Taipa, Cotai and Coloane are all connected by land or bridges. I discovered that some really cool hiking trails next to my building and decided to check out the local jungle sights. It was so beautiful to hike along these trails, view the twisty trees, look out for potential creepy crawlies, and discover pagodas around every bend.
I have to say that at this point, I am really impressed. The landscape of Macau is beautiful and I think that I will frequent these trails whenever possible. It's funny, no one every mentioned to me the gorgeous sights of this island when I was preparing to move. Everyone had an opinion on the Chinese casinos, the food, the pollution, the lifestyle. I wonder though, how many of those people every went for a walk on a sunny day along the South China Sea. So far, I think Macau is pretty great!
